The N. N. Punin papers include diaries, correspondence, notes, and documents reflecting his career as an art scholar, his relationship with the poet Anna Akhmatova, and his fate at the hands of the Soviet security apparatus. The Punin papers are subdivided into four series, of which the first comprises the ten diaries he kept in the years 1915-26 and 1936. The second series embraces three "conversation books" recording brief written exchanges between Punin and Akhmatova in the years 1923-26. The third series is of correspondence of which the largest fraction is by Akhmatova. Other correspondents include Punin himself and his wife Anna ("Galia") Punina. The final series, "other papers," includes documents written by Punin during his 1921 imprisonment, a draft essay by Punin, two graphological analyses of Akhmatova, and one of her 1910 poems in manuscript.
